The Military Support Team (MST) at First United Methodist Church has established an annual $500 scholarship for local graduating seniors who have shown an interest in the U.S. military during their high school years. The Lee Barnes Memorial Scholarship honors the late Lee Barnes, retired U.S. Army colonel and longtime member of First Church who was active for years in the Central Florida military community and formerly served as chair of our MST.

We invite all who knew Lee or would like to support our local high school students on their quest for higher education to donate to the scholarship fund. The MST hopes to collect at least $10,000 to endow the scholarship, payable each year from the interest accumulated in the fund. The first scholarship will be awarded to someone in the 2022 graduating class.

Applications will be open to graduating members of the junior ROTC units at Oviedo High School, Hagerty High School or Winter Springs High School, along with graduating Cadets in Civil Air Patrol Seminole Composite Squadron 116. They’ll be available for students who plan to attend a two-year community college, a technical school, or a four-year college or university.

To contribute to the scholarship fund, make your check payable to First United Methodist Church of Oviedo with “Lee Barnes Scholarship” in the memo line, then mail it to the church at 263 King Street, Oviedo, Florida 32765, ATTN: Jeanette Dickson.
